I know people pretty damned good

...You have a total of 32 LiveJournal friends. You requested to guess 32 entries. 1 was skipped due to invalid content (surprising?). You made 31 guesses. You got 28 correct. Doing the math for you, that means you got 90% correct.

90% ain't bad at all.

Guess that Friend

I'm considering halting this blog and moving everything to LiveJournal. I'd keep the archives up so that I can refer it things, but cease posting both here and LiveJournal. Instead, I'd just post to LiveJournal. What are your thoughts? If you're reading this on http://www.cs.westminster.edu/~cdean, send me a comment using the form at the end of the entry. If you're using LiveJournal to read this and you're not on my friends list, let me know.

My reasoning behind this is that I'm not going to get Bloggage (my blogware that I started about a year and a half ago) done before I'm out of school. I've finally picked up some website contracts so my grand scheme to make money from Bloggage is no longer needed. Also, Bram Cohen (, Wikipedia entry) uses LiveJournal (unmodified, at that), so why can't I?

It's also an issue of entry. I can update LiveJournal from anywhere in the world that I can get eentarweb access with a browser. I can update my blog from anywhere from which I can connect to the CS department web server. Now, in the case that I don't have web access but I do have outbound SSH access, I have a command line LiveJournal client in my home directory. Hell, I pipe these entries through it to cross post them to LiveJournal anyways. If I feel like updating while I'm coding, I can drop out of what I'm doing and very quickly update without even opening a browser.

Tell me what you think.

Restarting

...So Shaffer basically just told me that I should restart my project, at least the meat of it. I already have the damned token ring set up and working, but the work being done as the token is passed? Yeah, that code needs rewritten entirely.

Dammit.

Brilliant and spiritual! You are a Mystic Theurge!
Score! You have a prestige class. A prestige class can only be taken after you.ve fulfilled certain requirements. This may mean that you.re an exceptionally talented person, but it probably doesn't.
The Mystic Theurge is a combination of a cleric and a mage. They can cast both arcane and divine spells, and are good at both, making them pretty terrifying on the battlefield. They have more raw spellpower than just about any other class.
You're both intelligent and faithful, but not violent or deceitful. I guess that makes you a pretty good person.

When I grow up

...n May, my aunt died. I flew by myself down to the funeral. I grew up.

In June, I got hurt playing football with friends. I went to the hospital to xrays myself. I grew up.

In June, my friends had to leave MillionManLAN early. I was there alone for 2 days. I grew up.

In July, I presented a website design to a company and recieved my first web design contract. I grew up.

In August, I joined the WPAYL corporate board and took three positions on the board. I grew up a lot.

In September, I published my own newspaper for the first time ever. I grew up a lot.

On Monday, I will probably take over all of the registration duties for WPAYL.

I don't know if I want to grow up any more this year.

Too many quizzies

...
The Slow Dancer
Deliberate Gentle Love Dreamer (DGLDm)

Steady, reliable, and cradling her tenderly. Take a deep breath, and let it out real easy...you are The Slow Dancer.

Your focus is love, not sex, and for your age, you have average experience. But you're a great, thoughtful guy, and your love life improves every year. There's also a powerful elimination process working in your favor: most Playboy types get stuck raising unwanted kids before you even begin settling down. The women left over will be hot and yours. Your ideal woman is someone intimate, intelligent, and very supportive.

Your exact opposite:
The Hornivore

Random Brutal Sex Master
While you're not exactly the life of the party, you do thrive in small groups of smart people. Your circle of friends is extra tight and it's HIGHLY likely they're just like you. You appreciate symmetry in relationships.

Thursdays

...I think my blood pressure gets up on Thursdays more now than last year because I actually have to think when I'm laying out. Last year, Mega would say, "Put this on this page, put this on that page, too, now make it fit."

How do you guys like the changes to The Holcad? The teaser column on the front? The jump pictures at the top of the front page? The random campus statistics graph? Everyone I've talked to likes to new cartoon, so that's always a plus. What about Titan Eye Candy? Is that part of the features section a good or not-needed addition?

Sorry, Sarah, Garden State doesn't top out Band of Brothers as the most relaxing soundtrack. However, though, I'd definately put it in my top two. It's definately the most relaxing lyrical soundtrack, though. Thanks for the CD ;-)

I've been playing around with Scribus a little bit lately. I doubt that the Holcad could ever move to it, but it's possible. It would take a lot of learning, and Scribus, while being a final release (meaning it's not in testing), is not quite up to Quark level in usability and power. It does show a lot of promise, though.

It would be fun to create an open source-powered newspaper. All of the articles are under Creative Commons licenses, pictures, too. The layout could be released in an easily changed format so that people could change it how they see fit. Hmm. Thoughts?

I'm definately looking forward to funtime tonight. I definately need my Mocha Java Milkshake.

Pray or something

...Something bad happened this weekend. Something very bad. I don't wanna say anything about it on here - it's just too awful.

If you're the type to pray or prostrate or something like that, just pray for the people I've got in my mind. That's all you can do.

I'm probably going to be pretty depressed for the next week or so, so any words/actions that would brighten my day are welcome.

...Nice tact, bitch. You have no clue what we decided. You chose to align yourself with a group that totally is you; you are the stereotype and that's bad.

You almost make we want to not listen to you because you know what you're talking about, and so do I. You simply choose to ignore what you know and instead play dumb, just like your stereotype would. Nice way to stand out from the crowd.

Note: this has nothing to do with any previous post. KTHXBYE.

Decisions made without information

...Have you ever had a friend who made or was about to make a decision and you think that the made the wrong choice? It's hard to make someone see things your way when their vantage point is completely different from yours. You want to tell them that they're wrong, but you're afraid of offending them and possibly a lot of other people.

My problem is that one of my friends said yes when they should have said no. Everyone whom I've seen/heard make this decision has been changed by this decision in a negative way (at least in my eyes). It's a very personal decision, too, so I feel like I have no right to tell this person what I'm thinking. The most unfortunate effect of this decision is that the person will never know what it would have been like had they said no.

There's a possibility that the decision won't change this person. That's the ray of hope that I see barely shining through the clouds. However, those damned clouds are moving in fast and starting to block the light. The change has not yet begun, but it's showing; it's imminent.

I plead you, if you're reading this, don't let it change you. Let it become a facet of you, not the whole.

Westminster College Offers Education for Displaced Katrina Victims

September 6, 2005

Students impacted by Hurricane Katrina will be able to continue their education this semester at Westminster College, a private, church-related liberal arts college in New Wilmington, Pa.

Westminster will offer free tuition, room and board, and books for up to a dozen victims of Hurricane Katrina. The prospective students must be in good academic standing at their current institution and need to enroll at Westminster College by Sept. 20.  Contact Doug Swartz, dean of admissions, for additional information at swartzdl@westminster.edu or (724) 946-7107.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of Hurricane Katrina," said Westminster College President R. Thomas Williamson.  "We are close to capacity on campus, but will welcome the new students with open arms and hearts."

Westminster College is working with the Presbyterian Association of Colleges and Universities and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance on additional ways to help.

Numerous Westminster student organizations and support staff are also organizing activities to assist those in need, according to Westminster College Chaplain the Rev. James Mohr.  Contact Mohr for additional information at mohrjr@westminster.edu or (724) 946-7116.

About Westminster College...
Founded in 1852 and related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Westminster College is ranked among national leaders in graduation rate performance, according to U.S. News Guide to America's Best Colleges, and is one of the most affordable national liberal arts colleges in Pennsylvania. Westminster is also honored as one of "The Best 361 Colleges" and "Best in the Northeast" by The Princeton Review, and was recognized by the Templeton Guide as a "Character Building College."

Nearly 1,600 students benefit from individualized attention from dedicated faculty, while choosing from 40 majors and nearly 100 organizations on the New Wilmington, Pa. campus.

Hurricane Relief

...Alright guys, this isn't a joke...watch this movie clip and PASS IT ON to everyone you know. I think we all need a reality check here....and if it takes a cartoon squirrel with a bunch of sarcasm to get you to realize this then so be it.

IllWillPress on Hurricane Relief

Yesterday when I was at work I was told to promote our new fund to help the hurricane relief - donate a dollar and get a stupid little pendant. Well first of all it.s a SINGLE DOLLAR! Yet I still had people who said "no" whether it be out of Greed or a Lack of Caring; only a handful but still it's more than there should be. Then this one girl came up and said "no" and then turned to her friend and said "Man, people are really getting into this whole hurricane bullshit aren't they?" I must say, that REALLY made me mad because I personally have friends in New Orleans who now have nothing because of this storm, they literally have -NOTHING-.

A dollar is nothing people - GET OVER IT! I just got off the phone a few minutes ago with my District Manager's voice mail. I don't think it's too much to ask for each employee of the American Eagle company to donate $10-20 from their paychecks this week to the same fund. Let's assume that there are 30 people on staff at each store (some more, some less; it all evens out).

30 employees * $20= $600

(There are approximately 785 American Eagle Stores in the US including about 75 in Canada)

$600 * 860 stores= $516,000

(And this doesn't even include shipping departments, design centers and the Home Office)

That's HALF A MILLION DOLLARS people just by donating $20 out of your pocket. YES I know that gas is outrageous right now; however, at least you can still drive your car, you can still live in your home and you can still be safe and comfortable. Meanwhile there are people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama who have nothing, lost family members and have the threat of being raped, beaten or shot by idiots running around and causing trouble because the government in those areas is destroyed (let's not forget that in some areas down there for people who DO have a car, reports have been that they have paid over $5/gal of gas).

I'm not asking you to donate your money to the AE fund but find SOME organization to donate it to; every little bit helps.

Thank you SO MUCH for your time,
Josh Fincher (Blurryhaze312@gmail.com, www.JoshuaFincher.com )

Paypal froze a Hurrican Relief account that the creator of SomethingAwful.com set up. Unless Paypal realizes their HUGE mistake and donates every penny in that account to the Red Cross, and then some a lot, I know that I for one will HEAVILY considering closing my Paypal account.

A nice little tidbit

...From Cleric's profile:
The purpose of higher education has gotten perverted over the years. A college or university is not meant to teach you how to do a specific task but rather to give you the intellectual capability to learn new tasks. Computer Science isn't about a specific technology [or at least it shouldn't be], it's about the mathematical and scientific background to be able to adapt to new technologies.

An hour at Phi Kappa Tau

...Earlier today, Quiggles, Swearing Ben, and Hix invited me down to PKT to a 'get-together' (I don't think it qualified as a party, but I would have called it that otherwise). To be honest, I pretty much thought I was just gonna blow it off to shoot things or watch a movie.

Then I saw an Earthlink commercial in which one of the people said, "We're geeks. Geeks get it done, nerds don't." It was then that I decided that I should at least drop by, even if only for a couple minutes.

When I got there, McClelland was there. To see that big mofo was one of my main reasons for going there. I played some pool against Garrett the freshman, and then for $1.00 vs Chris the Pool Guy (can't EVER remember his last name). I got offered drinks a couple of times, but of course turned 'em down. I almost felt bad. Wait, no I didn't.

Yesterday was Kennywood with the band, it was cool. We managed to keep a group of at least 18 people together the entire day. Go us.

I'm tired.

I forgot to transfer the fonts and settings from the old Holcad machines to the new ones. *groan* At least our guy at the Herald had time to burn me a cd with the essentials on it.

So terribly difficult

...Thinking is tough when you don't have a neutral third party to which to can talk about things going on in your life. Everyone would just throw in their own feelings and inhibitions and supersitions if I asked them.

Maybe I'll just stick with instinct on this one. Instinct hasn't failed me that often previously, but this is one situation I have no clue how to handle, mostly because it's never happened before. Ever.

Before, one was a challenge. Now there are no less than five.

Suck to megasuck to awesome and beyond

...A lot has happened since the last time I paused life (well, at least Tivo style) to write some stuff down. I'm taking intermittent breaks here at Pittco to jot some things down.

I felt like doom Monday morning. I don't know why. I felt like an emo kid hardcore. Maybe it was a dream I had and didn't remember. My away message:
<insert random depressing away message about being loveless and sick of working>
wow, that's depressing.
*emo sigh*
Both Peck and JD offered their hilarious, yet true thoughts:
BinaryCleric: Standard Emo Rant:
"Dad, you bought me a Honda insted of an Acura!? You don't really love me, I'm going to write a song about how much you don't love me."
BinaryCleric: Tonight an emo band was born
--
orangepeck9: Emo for Christ:
orangepeck9: "Jesus loves everyone but me..."
orangepeck9: *sigh*
orangepeck9: fucking missionaries. They were all like, "We love J-C! He loves us as long as we shop at the Gap! Hot Topic is off limit!"
orangepeck9: ooh, shiney nickles over there ----<
Thank you, Cyndi, for lifting my spirits that day.

Monday night, Sandy Edmiston died after falling while rock climbing.

When you're at graduation - the last time ever you ever see everyone in your class - you look down the class roll and think to yourself, "What are they going to do with themselves?" Some, you think, will die in a van down by the river. Others won't make it to 21 before they have their fair share of DUIs. Others will get married a year after graduation, others will graduate from college and make six digit salaries the rest of their life. Some will make just enough to get by the rest of their life.

Sandy was one of those people that everyone thought would go far. And, up until the day she died, she had. Her academic merits were widely known, her personality loved by everyone whom she met. She was a hell of a writer, too. I've known her for a very, very long time (Logan, her brother, and I were in Scouts while her Dad was Scoutmaster for a year or two). She was destined for greatness.

I miss her.

Tuesday afternoon, I got the okay from the head of Information Systems to set up a bunch of computers from the dungeon in a cluster in the UNIX lab. We're now running Folding@Home on nine machines. It's pretty sweet - in 4 days, they've processed almost 20 work units. We've got 'em for a definate two weeks, possibly more depending on if Econ/Business wants them back (probably not). Check it out. Oh, I've also got it running on my work PC, so there are technically 19 CPUs running the program for Westminster. I eventually want to %winddir%\system32\logon.scr (the default screensaver for all Windows machines) with the F@H screensaver and let it run in the labs, too. We've have shitloads of workunits done if we did that.

Thursday night was the Lifeguard party at the pool. One of my coworkers is a lot more physically attractive than I thought: too bad I generally can't stand to be around her for more than a few minutes. Also, I DJ'd..well, kinda. I had my laptop, so I set up the collection of music which I had with me on shuffle. I forgot that since I code on Frog, 40% of the music on it is techno or electronica. My boss seemed to like it - I think it's a closet raver :-)

Friday night was a pre-teen swim at the pool. It was pretty boring until I heard a group of four 10-year-olds chanting "TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!" I knew not whether they had actually seen Animal House, but it still amused me.

Then, it hit me like a brick. I grabbed my towel and approached the kids. "You guys want to learn how to make a toga?" "YEAAAAAAH!" So, the history lesson began. They walked away knowing that a toga is something that the Romans wore and how to make one. It was awesome. Even more awesome, though, is that one of my coworkers' friends stopped in for a second to check on something and brought his very overdressed girlfriend with him. They saw the whole thing. I was never so proud of my geekness.

Zack (No_Code) was in Columbus on a business trip today and brough back two Crave Cases from White Castle. The one in Columbus and a couple outside of Cleveland are the closest ones to us. He's so awesome for bringing those. zack.rockness+=5 for that. Then we made the Pittco logos out of the slider boxes. Hehehe.

The LAN went pretty good after that. Zack, JD, and I annoyed the crap out of JD's girlfriend Alayne with our fracturedsounden deutchsprachen. I didn't win/get any prizes. The guy who beat me in the first round ended up getting second place and the guy who beat me the second round made it to the loser's bracket finals. I got one hit on each of them, though. My big problem was that the first round was on a map that I had never before played. The second was, but it just sucked.

I managed to get about an hour of sleep on two cushions I found in the gym. I took my Staceyblanket - it kept me covered.

I also started to write a program - I'll post more details on it as I become less ashamed of its description (read: I need to make the ideas easier to read).

This Saturday, I'm going to the Steve Miller Band concert with Mook, Drew, and Julie. It'll be kinda weird - it's the first concert I've gone to without Lauren. Next week I move back into Eich. Bleh.

I don't often do this

...It's been a couple months since I said anything about this.

I am one of those people taking part in Gratis Networks's FreeMiniMacs offer. It's one of those things where you sign up and then refer 10 people or so in order to get something for free.

It works. One of my LAN party friends got an iPod about 6 months ago after 5 people signed up using his link.

I'm not asking you to do any random offer. I did the eFax offer. It lets you have a virtual fax machine. The faxes get sent to your email box and then you can view them with a program downloadable at their site. Here's the catch: you only have to sign up and recieve one fax. You have to fill in a CC#, but after the month is up, you cancel the service and it's over. That's exactly what I did - it didn't cost me a dime and it took less than 5 minutes worth of work.

So, click on this link if you're ready to go or talk to me if you want to know more information. I've done a fair amount of research on this Gratis Network place and know that they are honest. If you decide to go through with it and do an offer, let me know so that I can know when to tell people to stop signing up through me and tell people to sign up through you when I reach my 10 people. Thanks people.

Genuine Advantage cracked..in 24 hours

...Microsoft's Genuine Advantage program become required a day or two ago. This program downloads an ActiveX control that verifies the legality of your copy of Windows. Unfortunately, Microsoft loves backdoors. One simple javascript function (javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all') before hitting 'custom' or 'express') can be used to foil the check.

More than likely MSFT will correct this soon, though. Or not. Afterall, it is Microsoft we're talking about here.

Yet another semi-boring week (with one incredible day)

... I've been really struggling to find stuff to write about. I don't really have that much to bitch about during the summer because there's a wonderful lack of stress and drama at home. I wouldn't exactly say I've been bored, though.

I don't remember Wednesday or Thursday. Friday night was a Teen Swim at the pool. I still don't understand why some girls feel so moved that they come to the pool and don't swim. Whatever. They're at that age where they've just discovered that guys are in fact looking at them and the guys are at the age when they realize that they just might have to eventually one day spend more than an hour here and there with a girl. After the swim, I went home and enjoyed Ye Olde SciFi Friday. For the uninformed, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica comprise SciFi Friday. SG-1 is getting good with Ben Browder (of Farscape fame) taking the helm as the main character. Claudia Black (also of Farscape fame) has been "guest starring", but my guess is that she'll become a permanent character very soon. The chemistry between Browder and Black is still there, and that's awesome (every Farscape geek wanted to be Critchton at some point, even if it was only to bang Aeryn).

Saturday rocked. I got a call midday from Stacey asking if I wanted to come up to Pymatuning to hang out at her campsite for the evening. I took a suit, knowing that the Shenango Reservior is very clean and swimmable. Little did I know that by the end of the day, I'd have gone tubing behind a speed boat for almost 3 hours. My body was hurting, and if my arm muscles weren't so tired, I'd have gone back out later. It was Christmas in July, so the fireworks were nice.

Sunday was not memorable.

When I arrived at work yesterday morning, all of the doors in InfoSys were wide open. The lobby was cold as hell. Apparently, the air conditioning for the server area had failed and all the machines shut down. It was well over 90 degrees back there (safe temp for computers is usually around 80 degrees. Everything was down for the day, so that was that. We just hung out in the icebox, erm, helpdesk for the day and played some games between phone calls. The part to fix the A/C won't be in until later today, so everything will be down until tomorrow (I think they're keeping the website up, though, but Groupwise is down).

Last night, Megan and I went to see Land of the Dead at the dollar theatre in Boardman. It was pretty funny. Eh, I guess I just laugh in the face of death. It was also amusing that Megan was dressed very gothically and I was dressed very geekily. We were getting all kinds of looks from people. They didn't know what to think. Some probably thought that she was a hooker, others probably though that we were relatives. Quiggles showed up at the movie, too, with some of his friends. I still haven't asked him what he thought of her. Haha.

I took two really good pictures off of my bridge a couple days ago. In fact, they are so good that I'm getting them printed 8"x10" and framing them. They're absolutely beautiful. You'll have to wait to see them in person, though, because I'm not going to put them online.

Anyone wanna save me from boredom this weekend?

A week of little

...I watched Laws of Attraction and In Good Company with Mom a couple nights ago. The latter was pretty good, but it could have ended better. The former, though, makes me wish either I was 20 years older or that Julianne Moore was 20 years younger. She's pretty attractive for a 45 year old.

I went to Clearview Mall with the Brothers Slazinski over the weekend. I bought the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' album Zoot Suit Riot, a throwback to yesteryear when swing music was all the rage. I haven't listened to it yet, but I will shortly. I also bought issue 1 of the Serenity comic book series. I'm not going to read it until I either find out it's different from the movie or after I've seen the movie.

I wrote up a proposal for Information Systems today. There is a number of unused computers down in the dungeon that could be put to use as SETI@Home or Folding@Home workhorses. There are 12 of them, 3.0 GHz w/ HT = roughly equivalent to 72 GHz of processing power. They've all got gigabit ethernet, too. They'd be perfect for the task. It wouldn't take that long to set up, and the continued maintenance would be miniscule. Shaffer has already volunteered the UNIX lab to house the machines. I just have to get the official approval from the heads of the department to go through with it.

I'm thinking that I might get a MySpace account just so that I can keep up with people who aren't on TheFacebook. I want to hear your opinion: MySpace or no MySpace? I've been pretty vehemently against it in the past, but I think I might be softening up a bit. Give me reasons that I should join.

I bought Stabbing Westward's Darkest Days today. I really like Save Yourself. I hope that the rest of the CD isn't screamo industrial like I have a feeling it might be. I got it for like $3 on half.com, so it's not like I payed an arm and a leg for it.

Let it go

...Well, I've gotten over this attack of the void of suck.

In other news, TitanNET is nearly complete. w00t. We're just awaiting documentation from the higher-ups.

I finished the practicum part of my lifeguard recertification, now I need the CPR and First Aid cards. It's gonna take forever to find people to do it considering that the two people with whom I normally recertify are both out of town this week. Bah. It's cost me almost more than it's worth to bother getting recertified. Between the amount of gas I spent going to and from Bucoco in Slippery Rock, the two days off I had to take in order to do it, and the half day I'm gonna end up taking whenever I finally find someone able to recertify my Red Cross stuff, I'm gonna be out almost $250. I'll be lucky if I make that up working at the pool at night for the rest of the summer.

Joel, I am never playing football with you again.

This past Saturday was the WPAYL reunion. It was awesome. I took not only crackers, but mounds and orange salad as well (all deserts - orange salad is a bit of a misnomer). Liz wasn't able to come, so that kinda sucked, but we had fun anyways. Four people brough their laptops - and I found that Keirsten had an open wireless access point online. I tried to explain why she should close it up and even kinda offered to do it for her, but no one there seemed to understand. I guess no one has been watching the news, even if the media has no clue what the feck they're talking about. Oh well.

Some day I'll get around to writing my "Why you should secure your wireless network" article. I'm such a hypocrite, though. I'm not secured. Hell, if anyone wants to drive their ass out here just to use my service, or if they're wardriving out here, let 'em find me. It's not like I'm not going to notice, seeing as though the road is far enough away from my wrouter that the signal is shit anyways and I'd notice any changes in speed. I've also only got one more IP left unassigned.

I have too move up my plans for the WPAYL corporate site. I though that registration for the 2006 seminar didn't being until January. Pfft. September!

The LCBR still hasn't acted on my plan. MY DAMNED 'M' KEY IS PISSING ME OFF! It came off at MML and hasn't been the same since. Anyways, I need that money. Or, my parents need that money, since most of that contract is going to pay for my insurance for the past and next year.

I found a couple old mixes before I went to Mugsies with Jesse Duncan Sunday. I found the Alpha mix (the first one I ever got - my cousin made it for me from Napster 2.0b1) and the WPAYL 2003 mix. I was jammin'.

I'm slowly climbing the ranks in BF2. I'm not awesome, but I usually find myself in the top ten at the end of rounds. I just need to keep pluggin'.

Frog's having some issues. Kismet segfaulted yesterday night and caused the MAC address on the card to get changed in software. I haven't yet figured out how to change it back. A reboot doesn't fix it. I may enough up calling Shaff. I need Frog for Thursday night's WPAYL corporate meeting.

Okay, that's enough for tonight.

Oh yeah, I OSXized my desktop at work.

Please, someone..anyone...

...Someone keep me from giving up again. The prize is so close, but the obstacles just keep getting in my way...

The void of suck struck again.

Have I changed?

...
You are Debian Linux. People have difficulty getting to know you. Once you finally open your shell they're apt to love you.
Which OS are You?

I think at some point I was Mac OS 9. Hmm. Well, Ubuntu is Debian-based, so I guess that result it pretty close.

Firefox extension for BF2

...I've started working on a Firefox extension that displays ranked server player data in the status bar and in a chrome page. If you're interested in helping me make it a reality, let me know. I need someone who can do file I/O in Firefox and make decent XUL windows, as well as someone who can make graphics. I've already got the backend pretty much done, but I don't really have a way of testing to see if it works until I can pull the data from gamespy's SOAP.

Catch me on AIM (Rinisari) or email me if you're interested.

MML and Nashville, abridged

...I apologize for not updating in a week and half. I've been busy :-)

Wednesday

We (Mom, Dad, and I) left about 6pm from my house in my car. I drove first. For four hours. We switched on the other side of Columbus about 10pm and Mom drove. It was the first time she had ever driven my car, and the first time I had ever sat in the back of my car. The ride down was otherwise eventless as usual. We could have made the entire trip with one tank of gas and about 1/8 of a tank to left, but we refueled in case something bad happened.

Thursday

I woke up around 10:30am and took Grandpa to lunch at Wendy's downtown. I had a fruit bowl. It was a classic marketing hook - I walked in not knowing what I wanted, but I saw the poster for the new fruit bowls and instantly wanted one because of the heat outside. I headed to the LAN about 3:30pm.

Cleric, No_Code, and Mondo came down in No_Code's Element from Pittsburgh and arrived about 5pm. I played BF2 solidly all day. About 8pm we went to White Castle for what we deemed "Shock and Awe" because of what White Castle does to one's body. I stayed at the LAN until about 12:30am and headed back to John's.

Friday

Things I accomplished:
  1. Invasion of White Castle (after the Shock and Awe campaign of last night, it was a slaughter - downed 4 + 1 fish last night, 11 today)
  2. Won a $50 keyboard (which will be sold since I can't type worth shit on it)
  3. Talked to one of the staff members (we're now on a handle basis)
  4. Won an ECS t-shirt (it'll be a pool shirt because it's white)
  5. took 30 pictures
  6. cleaned a toiletseat so that I could go
  7. acquired another 30 music videos (with more to come tomorrow)
  8. played battlefield 2 for over 8 hours
  9. spent $5 for an entire day's worth of food (if only real wars were that cheap)
  10. had so much fun that I can't remember any of the quotes

Saturday

Unfortunately, No_Code, Cleric, and Mondo had to leave. Real life caught up to them and bit them in the ass hardcore. So, I spent the day in my own little BF2 world. I played BF2 for around 5 hours before switching to UT2k4 and then some HL2DM. Then the bytes flew.

Soooo many bytes.

I filled 40 GB of my 200 GB HDD in about an hour and a half. I got some Daft Punk finally. I've heard a lot about them, but I don't want to buy a CD of a band I'm only iffy on and can't find anyone who actually has their CD.

Sunday

I actually saw my Dad this morning. John made me some eggs and toast - it was good. I came to the LAN and got the hacker video that people made yesterday. They caught some kid hacking CS and made a video of it. It's pretty funny. JungleRalph from Pittco was somehow involved in the production of the video, so that was cool.

I left the LAN about 2:30pm. It wasn't totally over until 4pm, and those who stayed to help clean could win a P4 3.8GHz EE or a BFG Geforce FX 6800 Ultra. My chances of winning one of those two were so small that I figured I might as well take off and be at Kathyrn's a little earlier.

I left for Kathyrn's after burning a Dropkick Murphys mix. Google Maps said four hours, but it was actually closer to three. I didn't speed that much, though. The speed limit in Tennessee is 70 mph. This appeased me greatly. I really pushed my SE-R to see what it could do. It performed quite well. I didn't have the air conditioning on, so when I got to Kathyrn's house in Nashville, I was incredibly glad to be invited to use the washroom immediately upon entry. I didn't have to pee that much, but I felt like I hadn't showered in days because of all the sweat.

After a wonderful dinner of meatloaf and broccoli/cheese casserole, Kathyrn took me for a tour of Nashville. She showed me the ungodly expensive houses (old money) and where she went to school. We eventually headed into the city to Vanderbilt University. There is a mansion on campus (or very close to it) of which Kathyrn gives tours. I enjoy 19th century architecture (okay, all architecture), so I got a kick out of seeing the massive dwelling. She didn't know if she was allowed to be there afterhours, but she had the key and alarm code, so we went.

We were both a little hungry for some dessert by now, so we headed for the downtown area. We spoke of cheesecake, and suddenly Kathyrn exploded in laughter. Bucking and jumping like an aggrivated red fox, she floored her Malibu and began a "what street are we on?" frenzy. "Oh man, we're going there!" "Where?" "Hehe, you'll love it. They have cheesecake." "But where, Kathyrn? Where are we going?" "I love it, this is so awesome, and you don't even realize where I'm taking you."

Within 5 minutes and some crazy turns later, we pulled into a 'fine establishment' selling various..wares of the..scandalous type.

The new Hustler store in town had a café with cheesecake.

So, in we went. She was laughing because of the radical idea. I was giggling like a 12-year-old because I had never been in a porn shop before. We toured around it for a bit, but neglected to go into the back - we were seeking sweet, sweet sweets, not sweet, sweet gratification. I did manage to find a magnet with Rosie the Rivoter on it that says "Fuck you, Buster!". We're gonna tape it to the wall underneath the same poster in the Holcad office.

The Hustler store was sadly lacking in their selections to the tune of "they have nothing", so we went to yet another first for me: a fondue restaurant. It was called "The Melting Pot." We ordered a dessert dish with dark chocolate and crunchy peanut butter as the fondue and bananas, pineapple, marshmallows, pound cake, cheesecake, and grapes as dipping elements. It was pretty tasty. It took forever, though - we were there for almost 20 minutes before we got served, on top of the 10 minutes we waited in line behind a party of 17 women. Somehow, Kathyrn and I got onto the topic of accents, so I used a different accent every time our waiter came to us. It was pretty funny. He thought I was British, then Australian, then German, then South African, then Southern, or something like that. It was definately a sight to see. In the end, we didn't tip him well because he didn't keep our drinks filled and took forever to get us our food and wasn't exactly nice, either. Kathyrn attempted to look forlorn once and he came over immediately. This amused me.

After a short stop at Kroger to get some flowers for her mother's birthday (Monday), we headed home. We talked for a bit then headed to bed. I am proudly the first man to ever sleep in her bed, even if she wasn't in it with me ;-)

Monday

Kathyrn and I went to the Pancake Pantry, a Nashvillian breakfast joint known for orgasmically good pancakes and accordingly long lines. We got in pretty fast, though. All the talk turned out to be true - the flapjacks were damned good. The key, they say on their menu, is the variety and quality of the flours which they use to make their pancakes. Indeed, indeed.

We stopped at Burlington Coat Factory on the way back to her house so that we could get me some swim trunks. Her mom wanted to go swimming and had invited me so that I didn't spend four hours alone in their house. Kathyrn had to go to work at Fox 17 (internship), so she left me in the care of her mother. Her mother is an extremely nice lady, definately upperclass. Her grandmother's car, a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E200 (something like that) had sprung a leak in the radiator somewhere, and it needed to be taken to the dealership for diagnosis and possible repair. Her mom drove her own car, a brand new Mercedes-Benz E300 (or something like that - to me, a Benz is a Benz). I drove her Grandmother's. Wow. That was an experience. I had fun. It was a very interesting experience, though, because the gas pedal didn't respond on touch. It had to be pressed quite a bit before anything happened. But believe you me, when you hit a certain point, that thing BUZZED. I peeled out 3-4 times in about a 20 minute drive.

We returned and headed to the pool. It was a small private pool attached to a tennis club. There were about six guards on duty, all presumably under 18 by their looks. In the hour and half we were there, there were three fileable incidents. By this, I mean three cases where a guard had to get into the water to save someone. At Neshannock, we'd have gotten our asses chewed out by angry mothers and have had to fill out a plethora of paperwork. I was starting to get a little paranoid, but it's their pool - they can run it how they see fit. I'm a strong enough swimmer than I knew I wouldn't need saving. There was one guard who was kinda cute, but she seemed to be the youngest of them all, so she'd fall under tap-tap.

Kathyrn came home from work in a nasty thunderstorm and we headed to Rafferty's, an Applebee's-style bar and restaurant, to meet some of her friends before a movie.

So then Kathyrn got us into a sneak preview of War of the Worlds. It may have been one of the best movies I have ever seen. I just might even go see it again with my Dad (it was that good). Don't try to see how closely it follows the book or the 1953 movie - take it as a separate entity with the same general storyline.

Highlight and/or click for spoilers:
This movie has a couple interesting points. First, it shows how a broken family can come together and learn trust in adversity. Second, it shows man's inhumanity to man in desperation. Third, it shows, at least from an American standpoint, how someone will do anything for their children; to save their children; to ensure their continued existence.

This family, obviously very broken, has serious problems. The mother is with another, much more wealthy guy than the father of her kids (Tom Cruise). The father and son don't get along at all, or at least up to a certain point. The daughter is frustrated because her father doesn't really know her. Then, it happens. The aliens come and all hell breaks loose. Ray (the father) does what any (normal) father would do and gets him and his children the hell outta there. I'm not going to go into extreme detail as to the middle of the movie because, well, it's late and there really isn't much to discuss other than the incredible amount of suspense.

This movie is more suspenseful than The Ring and Signs put together. There is a notable lack of music in the film. Sure, there is some music here and there, but the focus is on the sound of devastation and the tell-tale horn blow of the alien machines. The sound also focuses on the characters' breathing. Few things are more suspenseful than watching an 8-year-old's eyes grow and her breath quicken as she thinks she's about to die.

The people with whom I saw the movie (some of Kathyrn's friends) thought the grenade thing was pretty hokey. Okay, I kinda agree, but it went along with what was going on: Ray needed to get the alien's attention. He knew that the thing had a shield (remember the reporter in the van?), so he could throw a grenade at it and not harm Rachel. Of course, it would scoop him up. At this point, he probably wouldn't have known if Rachel was alive, he was just hellbent on killing this thing that probably just killed his daughter. Fortunately, and as all the sudden gasps of relief in the audience told, he gets put into a "collection basket" of sorts. This is where it got a little hokey. He gets sucked in, pulls the pins, and the people in the basket pull him back out before he gets consumed. The alien machine blows up, they all crash down.

The part of the son was well acted, but wasn't very useful. He wasn't present for more than half the movie (at least it seems that way). The point at which he leaves - the military front strike - was needed to get him out of the picture. He didn't do anything, really, except get his father to "let go of" him and let him do what he wanted to do. However, his father never had control of him. At the beginning of the movie, right before the aliens come, Robbie (the son) takes off in his father's car (underage, no license = bad). The movie could have not had the part of the son and been fine. I don't remember the book well enough to recall the boy's role, but in Spielberg's rendition, it was virtually nil.

If you see this movie, or want to see it after reading my *reads his own work* mediocre review, remember this: go to the bathroom before, don't try to find likenesses to previous works, and listen to the opening and closing verbage VERY closely.

After the movie, we went home and went to bed. We were both tired, and I had a long drive ahead of me the next day.

Tuesday

I left Kathyrn's around 8:45am after some dazzling eggs. I got back to Louisville around noon. I burned a Coldplay mix, had some lunch, packed the car, and Mom and I left John's around 2:30pm. She and I solved the problems of the world the whole way home.

I drove 11 hours that day. Mom and I were going to switch after Columbus, but I was feeling great and decided to do the whole thing so that I could say I did it.

I sure as hell did it.

Wedneday

I woke up. Then I went back to sleep. Then I woke up and went to work. I was zonked. I had no energy. Work was boring as hell because no one showed up for the first day of beta testing (btw, if you want to beta test TitanNET this year, send an email to titannet@westminster.edu, if you show up, you get a free copy of TitanNET in the fall). Mom informed me midday that the church picnic was that night. Ugh. I went after work. Or, I should say after attempting to make heads or tails outta the student loan consolidation shit that came down over the weekend. Bah to tap-tap and bratty children.

Thursday

More people showed up for the beta. Good. Someone has been going into the Holcad office the past few nights and leaving the lights on. No one should be in there but me or Mr. Raykie or Peck (Kathyrn is allowed, but she's 600 miles away), so Security was concerned. Entry no more. Security caught the girl and kicked her out. Camille changed the password, so if you're on Holcad staff next year and you need room access (editors and Egley only), contact me.

Billman and Billy beta'd today along with Brian Campbell. I wasn't there for Campbell's, but I'm sure it went fine. Billman gave me a CD with all of the music from Cowboy Bebop on it. w00t.

Future

This weekend, I'm going to Drew's grad party in Cranberry. Next weekend is the WPAYL reunion at Keirsten's house off the Evans City exit of I-79. I'm gonna try to get my lifeguard recertification done next week, too, since my arm seems to have healed to the point I can swim again. The LCBR decides on my site tonight, well, they decide if they're going to pay me what I want. I'm gonna get it, no doubt. Once I do, though, I gotta start collecting data - that's gonna be interesting.

TitanNET is pretty much done, we're just doing beta testing (see above). I'm not really looking forward to moving on towards the FirstAid program that the Athletic department wants. I don't want out of it, but I wish that there was someone who knew more about mobile programming than I.

What a weekend

...It's been a week since I posted; I don't remember most of last week. I got x-rays on my shoulder to see if something bad has happened, but the results haven't come in yet (strange). I'm back on Naproxen for the pain. I'm worried that I'm doing more damage because I'm using the arm and I just can't feel any damage being done.

Thursday and Friday at work were TOTALLY devoted to making a Firefox extension for switching the campus proxy settings on and off. I've got a little site set up for it, too. If you're on campus this summer, please try out this bitch and see if it works. It's currently only working in Firefox, but with some more time later on, it will work in Thunderbird and maybe even Seamonkey (the suite).

Lauren and I drove to Buffalo to visit Bethy Friday afternoon. We had a good ride up. Lauren and I can have a good time in just about any situation. We got to Buffalo around 7pm after a slight Lauren-commaneded detour (got off one exit too soon). It was interesting and we got to see Buffalo all lit up.

Saturday - that was an awesome day. I got up an hour after Lauren and Bethy did and immediately went to Wegman's (think Giant Eagle or Kroger's, but a lot nicer decoration) for Chinese. Unfortunately, I thought that the sign said $5.99/plate instead of $5.99/pound. I enjoyed my $15 lunch and even took some of it home (literally, not just back to Bethy's). Then we went to Canada to drive around and hit up some of the dollar stores and the Wal-Mart. It was pretty interesting seeing everything at 120% of the price at home. However, the dollar store was really an 82 cent store for us! Woo!

We headed back to Bethy's for a little bit then some place I can't remember then back to Canada, but we walked across the Rainbow bridge and into Clifton Hill. We went to Kelly's, a fine establishment with many selections. Their alfredo was very..runny. It was okay. Lauren got a little tipsy. It was funny. That night, we went back to Bethy's and finished watching Phantom of the Opera (Gerard Butler - of Dracula 2000 fame - can sing like you wouldn't believe!).

Sunday morning we went to church with Bethy's family. She got a reward/scholarship. One of the other girls who got one goes to RIT - she must be one of the 10 girls that go there (LOL@SWIGGER!). We went to Tim Horton's (think Dunkin Donuts but nice) for a late breakfast snack then to a Greek restaurant for dinner with her mom's side of the family (minus the family of the cousin which Bethy told me not to hit on :-p ). Lauren and I headed back shortly after.

I got home and collapsed.

I missed the WPAYL meeting - strangely, no one IM'd or called me. I guess my away message did in fact say "pained - stomachly". I was hungry and forgot to change it back. Ugh.

MML is this weekend. Don't expect an update before next Tuesday night unless I have SSH access from MML. I highly doubt it. Even if I do, I'll probably just post the entire weekend at one time. I get to see Kathyrn while I'm down there, too :-)

I can't wait until July 9th. Sooooo hardcore can't-waitness.

Grammar nazi

...Ever feel like you're one of the few people around you that actually cares about proper grammar? I'm not just talking written grammar, either. I'm talking every grammar possible: verbal, written, programming; everything. There are few things more troubling to me than acceptable grammar.

No one has to speak the Queen's English. No one has to be a veritable modern Cicero. All I ask is that people use proper grammar, especially when writing. When a person doesn't know how to use a grammar structure or is preparing an item to be published, that person should at least have someone else check over it to get another set of eyes on it.

I don't claim to be the most grammatically correct person in the world. Anyone who claims such a monumental title should be flogged heavily with dead beavers. I am more adept than others, yes, but I still have lots of people read that which I wish to submit for a grade or for publication in the Holcad or any other medium.

So please, the next time you are writing something for others to see, check your grammar. Have someone else check your grammar, too. Be safe, use proper grammar.

Satan's bundling up

...He'd better throw another log on the fire, too. It's getting cold down there.
Here's the snowball, and believe you me, it's stickin' around.

What intrigues me is that they've been doing this..for five years. This has been planned. It's wonderful. I love it. I can't say that I'll convert immediately, but assimilation is inevitable.

Hell of a week

...I haven't blogged in a week and two days because, well, until yesterday night, nothing really happened that was worth an entry on its own.

Last weekend, I spent a large amount of time with Mook. I went to his house Saturday and Monday. Tuesday was boring. Wednesday night, Stacey and I went to Boardman to look at messenger bags and get her a clock at Wal-Mart. Thursday night Mook and I went to see the Sounds of Summer concert that WAHS puts on at the Ampitheatre. It was Mook's first concert since we graduated and my second (first being last year's Mid-winter). GBT had selected a veritable cornucopia of Sousa, so I was happy.

I don't remember Friday. I simply don't remember it. I don't think I'm supressing it, and I wasn't drunk. It's like it's just missing. So, for all intents and purposes, Friday didn't happen. Oh. I cleaned the dog pen. Dammit, why couldn't I just have forgotten that?

Saturday was LoLLerLAN. It's Upon1 and Klide's LAN. It was pretty sweet. Cleric, No_Code, and Bez were there, so was Nyx. Noticeably missing was Progman. I didn't miss him. Dick wasn't there, either - that's a surprise. Usually he doesn't miss a LAN. I got some neat swag - no clothes, though. I don't think I can fit any more clothes in my closets (2 of them). Between school and LANs, I've gotten enough shirts that I quite literally don't have to wash clothes for 3 weeks, besides jeans/short.

I started writing a BitTorrent tracker, but I don't know if I'm gonna finish it before MML. I think I have everything theoretically working, but I need more people who know what they are doing to help me out (hint, hint, *cough*zach*cough*jd*cough*). I copped a feel of PHPBT and saw how they do their database. They have a table for each torrent. It make sense, but it seems like the database would getting frelling huge after a couple days of use. Of course, they prune, but eh.

It would be awesome to write a simple webserver/tracker combination in Java or Python. I could probably pull it off in Java, but it would be easier in Python since Python has all that CGI and WWW stuff built-in.

Ubuntu on Frog has gone well. I still don't have DRI working - the Unichrome drivers don't support the K8T800 mobile chipset yet, so I'll have to wait for a while. The only reason I need them at the moment is 3ddesktop, but that can wait.

I'm kicking around the idea of dropping doing my own blogware and just using WordPress. It's free and PHP/MySQL based. It would be tougher to integrate it with my new unreleased site design, though. Hrm.

I want McElree (Hoyt 228) back. Hoyt 315 is too hot. Bah.

Google & Spam

...I haven't seen anyone mention this anywhere yet. If you're a Gmail user, open it up and go to your spam folder. At the top, in the new WebClips panel, recipes from RecipeSource that have spam as an ingredient will be listed. Google's sense of humor cracks me up.

I installed
Ubuntu on Frog last night. I made an image of the Windows installation in case I couldn't get Ubuntu or Gentoo to work. I decided against Gentoo because of the sheer time it takes to set up. I wanted to spend some time getting this thing operational in the matter I like, but I didn't want to waste the hours and hours compiling, especially late at night (22:00).

It took about an hour and half to get everything up save DRI. DRI is going to take some work. VIA just released official open source drivers for the s3 graphics chipset, but the developers of the unofficials ones think that their version is better. Wireless took a little bit of work, but it was mostly just following a HOWTO. I'm detailing my journey over the Notebooks and Linux forum of NotebookForums.

I spent a large part of the morning reading Bram Cohen's livejournal (lj user="bramcohen">) . Smart guy, he is. Go back to the start of the journal (only about 3 pages) and read. He's very coherent and makes a lot of good points. He's from the Buffalo area, iirc. Cool.

Since I'm crossposting this, I'll see how my blog deals with lj-specific tags.

Ill. Senate OKs Video Game Restrictions

...I never thought it would come to this. This is simply astonishing (secondary link in case the other gets pulled).

I agree with the idea of the bill. Children should not be allowed to play extremely violent or sexual videos until a certain they reach a certain maturity level. However, this permission should not come from the government. This permission should come from a child's parents. The parents and family are the only entities that could possibly know if a child is 'ready' for violent or sexual games.

This bill covers up for the parents. It takes more responsibility out of the hands of parents and puts it into the hands of the retailer. What is the mission of the retailer? Sell things! What is the mission of the parents? Raise/honor/nuture children! By putting the responsibility of the exchange of violent/sexual games for money (wow, that sounds like it's bad!) into the hands of those whose sole existence relies on that exchange, nothing is accomplished.

I can almost see violent/sexual video games turning into something like cigarettes. It's illegal for anyone under 18 to buy them, but it's not illegal for those under 18 to smoke them. What's the next step to prevent these games from falling into the hands of such fragile minds? Make it illegal to give them to minors or for minors to even have them. Then it becomes like alcohol, and we college kids all know how well that law deters underagers from drinking. *rolls eyes*

Kudos to the Ill. Senate for removing the jail time clause. If you've got some crazy guy hellbent on selling violent/sexual games to minors, dag yo, fine is ass until he can't afford to even walk to work. I'm not being sarcastic, either. Unless the guy gets his cornhole involuntarily explored while in jail, he's gonna be back out and doing it again, just like music downloaders.

This is the part that irks me most:
The sponsor, Sen. Deanna Demuzio, denied the measure would interfere with free speech rights.

"Video games are not art or media," she said. "They are simulations, not all that different from the simulations used by the U.S. military in preparation for war."
HA. Not art? Not media? Then tell me, miss Senator, what is your idea of art? What is your idea of media?

  • Artistic talent is required to make the game anything other than black and white, and there are some games that even make black and white look damned good (i.e. old school Oregon Trail).
  • Writing code is an art. No one writes the same code for the same thing.
  • Media seeks to convey a message. EVERY game has a message, whether it is the senseless killing of mass amounts of people combined with the theft of cars, drugs, and copious amounts of hookers, or a game about making and maintaining a farm. No video game can be substituted for a real-life experience.
  • Media has advertisements. So do video games.
  • There are art and media conferences. There are video game conferences, too.
And now, the humdinger. I'd imagine that a line like this would be the final clip on The Daily Show if it were caught on tape.
"I'm going to vote for this bill, but I'm voting for it for one reason - because this is a political bill," said Sen. Mike Jacobs. "If I vote against it, it will show up in a campaign mail piece."
Whatever happened to doing the right thing? "Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death." - taken from the Knight's Oath, as recited in Kingdom of Heaven (excellent movie, by the way).

If something like this ever comes to Pa., I want to know about it so I can organize people to express their ill-regard for a law like this.

Best seminar EVER

...WPAYL rocked. Recap:

Thursday: I was late getting there by about an hour and a half. I had wanted to arrive at Cal U around noon, but due to me taking forever to gather and deposit my checks at the bank as well as taking I-76 instead of I-79 (to avoid construction), I was late. Fortunately, though, going that way was much more fuel efficient even if it would have taken the same amount of time to take I-79 and get caught in the construction. I arrived and the 5-6 people already there had just left to go to Subway down the street. I caught up with them and we went to Dairy Queen after. Dairy Queen sucks if you don't get a Blizzard. I didn't have room for it, so I got a vanilla cone - it sucked. I was disappointed. Liz got there in the mean time. I was excited to see her :-)

Everything was really streamlined in setup. I was in awe. I'm still in awe. I don't know how everything went so smoothly. Eh.

Friday: People arrived early..really early. We had some kids there at 8..they're not supposed to be here until like 8:30-9am normally. We weren't ready, but that was fixed quickly. I taught Boom-chicka-boom to the ambassadors. w00t. Everything progressed smoothly. The two initial speakers were good speakers, but not very entertaining. In the afternoon, I didn't hate Jack! I was prepared this year - instead of burning CDs like a madman and trying to switch CDs into a one-tray/one-dic player, I had my two laptops (Trebuchet and Frog..Steve, you make me proud for remembering them). I kept up with him and his rampant song stoppings/changing without a problem. w00t. The day progressed. The Crazy Olimpyks (intentional misspelling!) were fun. It was the first time that I wasn't taking pictures. I haven't been able to do the event since my first year on junior staff (the year after I went as an Ambassador) because of my "bad wheel" (the bionic knee). Usually, I take pictures. Liz was doing that this year, soooooooo I judged! I'd never been a judge before. w00t. The whole thing ran late, so we ended up doing WPAYL Wuvs until about midnight instead of going to the floor parties. I'm not big on the floor parties. Guys and girls intermingled when they weren't supposed to, so that drove our security guy crazy. We had to be double sure that there were no overnight visitors where there shouldn't be. There weren't.

Saturday: Morning came fast. I wanted to stay in bed. I haven't slept-in unstressed in weeks. Haha, not today. I was at breakfast at 8. The traditional legal panel was first. I enjoyed it as an ambassador. I'm not as actively engaged in it as before since the only people on the panel are from Washington County. If we got a state senator or a US rep., I'd be VERY engaged in it, probably even asking about the FTAA, Patriot, DMCA, and RealID Acts. Santorum has basically blown me off every time I've sent him a letter by waiting until after the matter that I wrote about went through his hands and is law. That pisses me off. Anyways, the next panel was a group of students from Bethel Park. These students who spoke have all been through drug addictions. The name of the talk they give is "Tough Choices, Tough Consequences" and it is simply astonishing. Rarely have I ever seen an entire room of people dead silent as one of their peers tells the audience about their addictions. While I can't relate directly, I do sure have friends whom I'd love to convince to seek help (if you're reading this and you do drugs, this means you).

Tom's Time Management workshop went really well. He worked on it really hardcore and it made an impact. I converted his w0rd doc into an Impress presentation (NOT POWERPOINT, BITCHES!). Then came Jack's diversity workshop. This is one of my favorite parts of the seminar. Jack is a wonderful person, and while I don't care for some of the sillier things he does, when he gets serious, it's soooooo effective. He just hits it head-on. After the Diversity thing, he did a mini-game type thing with a bunch of different events. I got to play some EXTREMELY relaxing music (yeah, that's from iTunes..it came on Frog preinstalled and I didn't feel like putting Winamp on it). I was more relaxed at that point than I have ever been at a seminar. I could get used to it :-)
That night, the talent show rocked. There was a guy who worked the piano like he designed the damn thing. I think some would call him a 'prodigy'. There were a lot of good acts, including a guy who covered that Ryan Cabrerra song. The kid even looked like him. Afterwards, the dance. What what the dance. Tom's only error: playing Sandstorm in the first 10 minutes of the dance. I DDR'd like mad for the ENTIRE song. I was sweating copious (PECK!) amounts of sweat. Marty was drenched by the end. Liz wasn't feeling great and was sitting down during the only slow dance, so Bridget, Jason, Grace, and I went around randomly quadruple-Roxburying couples.
Later that night, we picked our new officers for the alumni board. Danielle is the new president, Malik is vice president, Boo (Bill) is treasurer, and Lurane is secretary. I have to talk with Tom about what I'm to do. I'm now officially on the Corporate Board as the "Director of Technology." Originally, the Tech Chair position on the alumni board (which I've held since June of 2002, but acted since June 2001) was created to have a person in charge of the website. Well, that's basically a part of my job as Directory of Technology of the Corporate Board. There is no one on the alumni staff of this seminar or even last seminar that is capable of maintaining even the alumni site. At seminar this year, I identified two or three who displayed characteristics of such skills, but they seemed rather like they probably wouldn't care to return as alumni staff.

Sunday, bloody Sunday: So we didn't get out of the meeting until about..oh, 3:30am. By the time I got down to my room and took a shower, it was 4:30am. I attempted to get up around 7:30am, only to realize that 3 hours of sleep does nothing to my hair and I didn't need to take a shower. BACK TO BED. Zach got me up around 8:45am and then Tom called, seeking me and requesting my prescence in the Performance Center. Zipzipzoom- I was there. Unfortunately, I yet again forgot to do that little thing some people call "eating" and worked my way through the remaining time in breakfast. The panels that morning went off without a hitch, but not without some coercion. We were supposed to be in a different building, but we had to move back to the Performance Center because the other room apparently didn't have an LCD projector, which was needed for one of the panelists. Combine that with my oversleeping, and people were frantic. The Cal people couldn't get the mic on. Pfft. I went up and tried to fix it, but one of the guys kinda pushed me out of the way like I was a little kid. So, rather than do the little kid thing and keep trying, I stood back and watched these people try to SIMPLY TURN ON THE MIC AND TURN UP THE VOLUME. That's all they had to do. Then they finally gave in. HA.
Drew put together the slideshow this year. That relieved me hardcore. Doing sound/lighting, pictures, and the slideshow for the past 3 years has not been exactly..streamlined and stressless. I was able to focus on sound/lighting this year, and it showed. The music was better, I wasn't as stressed (read: I didn't want to kill Jack 20 minutes into any of his talks), and someone else got to have their name on it for once. Liz took a lot of the pictures. I took a few and so did Alex and Zach.

So, this year went off with few hitches. It was, by far, the most streamlined, most unstressful, most well-done seminar yet. There are still tweaks to be made, but this year set a new standard.

I'm already getting withdrawls. If you were staff and are reading this, you know what I mean. If you were an ambassador and are reading this, you will know what I mean - give it a day or two to sink in.

I can't wait to spend time with Liz this summer :-D

Here are some lyrics from the weekend :-)

Louisville for a Celebration of Life

...Well, the past few days have been fairly interesting, to say the least.

Saturday, I moved out (Megan helped) and I washed my own clothes entirely myself for the first time in a LONG time. ALL of them. Kathyrn gave me some advice on washing my Stacey blanket (that nine foot polar fleece one with the dice on it) while she and I 'waxed' about the Holcad. I ended up not going to bed until about 2:30am since I hadn't washed clothes in almost 3 weeks.

Sunday was the big day - my first solo flight. No, sadly, I don't mean me piloting. I flew to Louisville on Southwest all by my lonesome. Both flights (PIT->MDW->SDF) were fine. There was a flamboyantly gay flight attendant who sang like crazy. All of his public service announcements were wild. You could definately tell that he loves his job - that's rare. The entire crew of both of the flights had fun with it. The latter flight crew even made fun of Bush and the TSA a little. I, as well as others on the flight, enjoyed the jokes. That's one of the things I love about Southwest - there's very few businesspeople on the plane, so people aren't all uptight with sticks in their ass.
It was good to see Mom for the first time in a month. It was the first time that she and I had been separated for that amount of time. Granted, we talked on the phone at least once a week, but still. The mood was joyous, yet somber. I think we all would have much rather me not been there, 'cause that would have meant that Jody hadn't died.
We swung into the city and picked up Grandpa Hokanson. He was surprised to see ME at the door. In fact, he was so surprised that he forgot his lower dentures. We got to the Hamilton house and sat down to eat. "Aw, hell."

Monday was eh. I slept in until about 10:30. We didn't have to be at the funeral home until about 1. The home made some kickass cookies. I met lots of people. Some people stuck out - they were the ones closest to Jody at work. Dad and I picked up Mickey - a step-uncle whom I never knew I had. He reminded me of a combination of Robo from Chrono Trigger and TicToc from Return to Oz. He's a pretty cool guy. His mother married my Grandpa Hokanson in the late '60s. She died in '90. Monday night we all came back and ate the copious (PECK!) amounts of goodies and meats we had been given by various persons.

Tuesday - funeral, err, celebration of life. The only thing that sucked about it was the simple fact that Jody had died. Everything was awesome and beautiful. I'm not going to detail it here for fear of breaking down in the middle of Midway airport (more on that later). After the service, we returned to the Hamilton house to partake of vitt'ls and celebrate Jody. And a celebration it was.

Later that evening (I guess last night, hehe), I got online to check-check-check-checka da email and stumbled upon a TechBargain for an Averatec laptop - a 3200 series - the type I've been wanting: $750. I logged into my online banking thingy - I had enough money! Woo! So, as I was about to hit the checkout button, I thought to myself, "I could just drive to the Staples that is 5 miles away and buy it, then I'd have it for the ride home." So, I closed the window and headed out for Staples. I needed to drive around anyways - it relaxes me more than just about anything. I got to the store on Hurstborne - they were out of them. However, the Dixie Highway store still had more - 2 more. I had the Hurstborne store call and reserve one for me. I got there about 30 minutes and a phone call for a address number later. When they rung me up, everything totaled $700. Woot. After tax, it was $750. Double woot.
So I'm now the proud owner of an Averatec 3270-EE1. It's got a Sempron 2800+ on a Via chipset with a Hitachi (I think) 60 GB HD and a DVD+/-RW burner. The graphics are integrated, but I don't need the high power stuff, as this laptop is going to be meant for typing, coding, and being away from a machine that could temp me with sweet, sweet pixel-slaying madness. It has XP Home sp2 on it, but not for long. I set up just enough stuff so that I could use the 'net if I found a wireless access point in Midway (failed - there is NONE - WTF!?!? - believe you me, I warwalked: I warwalked like a geek on a mission). I'll be running a 15 GB Windows partition and the rest dedicated to Linux - probably either Gentoo or Ubuntu. Zack (No_Code) bought one of these a while ago and put Gentoo on it, but it's the older model with the 2200+. I fired up Knoppix 3.7 on it and it ran fine, so that's a good sign.

So, here I sit at Gate A10 at Midway airport. Never did I ever think that I'd be blogging (even though this isn't gonna get posted until I get home tonight) on a 12.1" laptop I just bought in the middle of an airport.

I guess I've done a lot of stuff I've never done before in the past week. I've moved out of Eich. I've washed my own clothes. I've flown alone. I've been in five states twice - and another I flew over. I've spent a shitload of cash on something convenient. I got detained going through Louisville security because I forgot to take out a huge letter opener that Erica had given to me (the lady was pissed as hell, not at me, but at PIT because they had missed it).

Tomorrow, I head to Cal U for WPAYL. I can't wait. It'll be a wonderful relief from the pain and sorrow of the past week.

Airports are boring. I think I might go try to find me an arcade or something. My laptop is almost fully charged, and my Rio is probably near death (no music on my laptop yet). I'm still getting used to this smaller keyboard. It'll be fun. I promise.

By the way, the new laptop's name is 'Frog' in memory of Jody.
